How to dispose of eye drops

Check the label first for disposal instructions; Quell’s carton doesn’t give any. After that, the simplest safe options are a drug take-back site or the household-trash method the FDA describes for most medicines.

Take-back sites

Many pharmacies have drop-off kiosks for unwanted medicines, and some police stations do too. There are also national take-back days through the year. Search for a take-back location near you before reaching for the trash.

The household-trash method

  • Mix the drops with something unappealing, such as used coffee grounds, dirt or cat litter.
  • Seal the mixture in a plastic bag or a container with a lid.
  • Put it in your household trash.

The point is that children and pets can’t get at it, and that nobody mistakes it for something usable.

Empty bottles

An empty bottle can go in the trash with its cap on. Check your local recycling rules before putting small plastic medicine bottles in the recycling.

Unopened bottles you got a refund on

Under the refund policy, an unopened bottle you change your mind about stays with you. Keep it sealed and within its storage range if you may use it later, or dispose of it the same way as any other medicine.
