Traveling with eye drops

Bring the bottle you are using, keep it inside the label’s temperature range, and keep the tip clean. Those three things matter more than anything else about traveling with drops. Quell’s storage line is: Store between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).

Packing it

Pack the bottle where it is shielded from heat and from being crushed. A closed pouch inside a carry-on works better than a jacket pocket, or the bottom of a tote where it rattles around with keys.

Bring the carton if there is room. It has the full Drug Facts panel printed on it, which is handy if you need to show someone what the product is, or want to reread the warnings away from home.

If the trip is longer than your bottle has left, pack a sealed spare. Used as directed, a bottle goes in roughly a month, and buying a replacement on the road isn’t an option when the product is sold online.

Heat is the main risk

The top of Quell’s range is a warm day. A car parked in the sun, a beach bag or a tent can all run hotter than the label allows, and they do it quickly.

If a bottle has spent time somewhere too hot, look at it before your next dose. The Do not use line reads: If this product changes color.

Wind, altitude and dry air

Trips are full of the conditions that dry eyes out. Wind and altitude outdoors, air conditioning and central heat indoors — all of it pulls moisture off your eyes faster than you can replace it.

None of that changes the directions, which stay the same wherever you are: Apply 1 drop 3 times per day in each eye.

Flying

Airlines and airport security set their own rules for liquids, and those rules change from time to time, so look them up before you pack. Small eye drop bottles are generally easy to carry on, but the rules in force at your airport are the ones that count.

Keeping the tip clean in transit

Hotel counters, tray tables and car consoles are all surfaces, and the label’s rule applies to every one: Do not touch tip of bottle to any surface to avoid contamination. Clean hands are harder to come by in transit than at home, so where you can, plan doses for places with a sink.

Ordering before you go

The site ships within the United States only and doesn’t promise a delivery date, so order with time to spare instead of counting on a package arriving the day before you leave. Every order gets an email when it ships, with a tracking number when one is available, and you can check on it at any time from the order tracking page.

Orders of 3 bottles or more ship free, which can make sense ahead of a long trip. Unopened spares can be refunded within 30 days of delivery if you end up not needing them, and they don’t have to be mailed back.

If something goes wrong while you are away

Stop use and ask a doctor if you feel eye pain or changes in your vision, if irritation or redness continues, or if the condition worsens or persists for 72 hours. That holds whether you are at home or not. For a medical emergency, call the local emergency number. For questions about an order, call 615.465.6041, M–F 9AM–5PM CST.
